Module 7: Measure & Iterate
Search Console, tracking rankings, the quarterly SEO flywheel — the measurement habit that turns effort into compounding results.

Search Console: the four reports
Google Search Console is free, and it is the only SEO tool that shows you Google's own view of your site. Four reports do 90 percent of the work. Performance: which queries and pages bring clicks and impressions — your reality check. Coverage: which pages are indexed and which have errors — your health check. Enhancements: how your schema and mobile usability are doing. Links: who links to you and which of your pages get the most links — your ledger's source of truth.
Set it up on day one if you haven't: verify ownership, submit your sitemap, and let data accumulate. Then make it a monthly habit — thirty minutes, same four reports, written notes on what changed. SEO without measurement is just hope with extra steps.
The Performance report deserves special attention: sort by impressions to find queries where you are visible but not clicked (title fixes from Module 2), and sort by position to find page-two rankings one push away from page one (the refresh candidates from Module 4). Search Console doesn't just report your SEO — it writes your to-do list.
Build brief
Open Search Console's Performance report for the last 3 months. Write down your top 5 queries by impressions, your top 5 pages by clicks, and 3 queries with high impressions but low clicks (your title-fix list).

Reading the numbers
Three numbers tell most of the story. Impressions: how often you appeared in results — visibility. Clicks: how often someone chose you — the only number that pays. Click-through rate (CTR): clicks divided by impressions — how compelling your result is. And average position: where you typically rank. Learn to read them as a set, not alone.
The diagnoses: high impressions + low CTR = your title and description are losing the click (Module 2 fix). High CTR + low impressions = people love your result but few see it — you need more rankings (content + links). Position 11–20 with rising impressions = page two, one refresh away from page one (Module 4 fix). Position 1–3 and flat = defend with freshness and new links.
Try this estimator: monthly clicks ≈ monthly impressions × expected CTR for your position. Position one averages roughly a 30% CTR, position three around 10%, page two under 2%. Run your own numbers below — it turns “we rank #8” into “moving to #3 is worth about 400 clicks a month,” which is how you prioritize. Numbers turn SEO from art into arithmetic.
Read them as a set
What the numbers diagnose
| Signal | Diagnosis — and the fix |
|---|---|
| High impressions, low CTR | title and description are losing the click — Module 2 fix |
| High CTR, low impressions | people love it but few see it — need rankings: content + links |
| Position 11–20, impressions rising | page two — one refresh away from page one: Module 4 fix |
| Position 1–3, flat | defend with freshness and new links |
Build brief
For your top 10 queries, record impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position. Write the diagnosis for each (losing the click / need visibility / one push away / defend) and the one fix you'll make.

The quarterly SEO flywheel
SEO compounds — but only if you work it as a cycle. Here is the quarterly flywheel: Month 1 — Audit: Search Console review, technical check (Module 3), index audit. Fix what is broken before building. Month 2 — Build: publish or refresh moat content (Module 4), optimize on-page (Module 2). Month 3 — Earn: outreach sprints (Module 5), review pushes and Business Profile posts (Module 6). Then measure, and the next quarter starts smarter.
Each quarter feeds the next: content gives outreach something to pitch, links lift the content's rankings, rankings bring data, data sharpens the next quarter's targets. The first quarter feels slow. The fourth feels unfair — in your favor. Most competitors quit in quarter one. Consistency is the strategy. The flywheel is the tactic.
Your standing commitments: thirty minutes in Search Console monthly, one content piece or refresh monthly, one outreach sprint monthly, one technical check quarterly. Put them on the calendar now — recurring, non-negotiable. A year of this beats any single trick, because there are no tricks left. Just the system, run on schedule, measured every step. That is advanced SEO: not secrets, but execution.

Plan your first quarter: write your Month 1 audit list (5 fixes), your Month 2 build list (2 content pieces or refreshes), and your Month 3 earn list (10 outreach targets + review push). Put the monthly Search Console review on your calendar as a recurring event.

The quarterly flywheel
Jordan's page gets 8,000 impressions/month at position 9 with a 1.5% CTR. Using the estimator, moving to position 3 (~10% CTR) would gain roughly 680 clicks/month. What's the right priority?
Your turn: Quarterly plan: write your full 90-day flywheel — Month 1 audit fixes (5), Month 2 content (2 pieces), Month 3 outreach (10 targets). Add the estimated click value of your top 3 opportunities from the estimator.
