Content Marketing & Blogging Glossary
Every field has its jargon. Here are the terms this course uses, explained the way you’d explain them to a friend — no dictionary voice, no assumed knowledge.
- Content strategy
- The one-page plan stating who the content is for, what it should cause them to do, and how you’ll know it worked — written before a single post.
- Topic pipeline
- Your running list of article ideas, fed by customer questions, search data, and sales conversations — so you never stare at a blank page.
- Search intent
- What the searcher actually wants when they type a query: an answer, a comparison, a purchase. Match the intent or the ranking won’t convert.
- Google’s trust that you know a subject deeply, earned by covering a topic cluster thoroughly — not by one viral post.
- Editorial calendar
- The simple schedule of what publishes when. Its real job isn’t planning — it’s protecting a sustainable cadence.
- Distribution
- Everything that happens after “hpublish”: newsletter, social, outreach, repurposing. Publishing without distribution is writing in a drawer.
- Repurposing
- Turning one post into many formats — thread, video, email, carousel — so one unit of work reaches five audiences.
- Outreach
- Asking relevant people — newsletter writers, linkers, partners — to read and share your post. Polite, specific, and human beats mass templates.
- Backlink
- A link from another site to yours. Earned with genuinely useful content and real relationships — still a major ranking factor.
- Bounce rate
- The share of visitors who leave without interacting. High bounce on a how-to post usually means the answer wasn’t findable fast enough.
- Time on page
- How long visitors stay. A rough proxy for “did this actually help” — more honest than pageviews.
- Cornerstone content
- Your few best, most comprehensive posts — the ones everything else links to and the ones you update forever.
- Content refresh
- Updating an old post with new information, examples, and screenshots. Often the highest-ROI hour in content marketing.
- Lead magnet
- A free resource offered inside content to convert readers to subscribers — the bridge between traffic and the email list.
