Customer Retention

Most businesses spend every dollar chasing new customers while the ones they already won quietly leave. By the end of this course you'll run retention like a system: the Onboarding Window, the 30/60/90 Ladder, the Save Play — so every customer you earn keeps paying you back.

Keeping a customer costs a fraction of finding one — and most businesses spend all their energy on the expensive half. In six modules you'll learn the math of churn, the 7-day onboarding window that decides whether a new buyer stays, win-back campaigns that revive dormant customers, loyalty systems that actually drive repeat buying, and how to turn happy customers into your best acquisition channel. Stop leaking revenue. Start keeping customers.

What you’ll learn

  • Calculate your churn rate, retention rate, and customer lifetime value from your own numbers
  • Build a 7-day onboarding sequence that gets every new customer to their first win fast
  • Run the 30/60/90 Ladder — escalating win-back offers that revive dormant customers
  • Turn repeat buyers into referrers with a simple referral offer that runs itself

Is this for me?

Who is this course for?

Anyone whose customers can buy more than once — stores, subscription businesses, service providers, course creators. If a customer who comes back is worth more than a customer who buys once, this course pays for itself in the first module. (It's free, but you know what we mean.)

What do I need before starting?

A list of past customers — even a small one — and access to whatever you use for email. You don't need fancy software or a big list. Everything in this course works with a spreadsheet and a basic email tool.

How long does it take?

Six modules, about 30–45 minutes each of learning. Most people finish in two weeks — and the real coursework is in Module 1: your first onboarding sequence, written and sent before you move on.

Module 0

Module 0: Start here

Why retention is the cheapest growth you'll ever buy: the math of churn, what a lost customer actually costs you, and the lifetime-value lens that changes every marketing decision you make.

Module 1

Module 1: The Onboarding Window

The first seven days decide whether a new customer stays or silently disappears. This module teaches the Onboarding Window, the welcome sequence that gets buyers to their first win, and how to engineer momentum on purpose.

Start module →

Module 2

Module 2: Win-Back Campaigns

Dormant customers are the cheapest revenue you'll ever find — they already trusted you once. This module teaches the 30/60/90 Ladder: escalating win-back offers at 30, 60, and 90 days dormant that bring buyers back.

Start module →

Module 3

Module 3: Loyalty Systems

Points, tiers, and surprises — what actually drives repeat buying and what's just decoration. This module teaches you to build a loyalty system simple enough to run and strong enough to change behavior.

Start module →

Module 4

Module 4: Feedback Loops

Customers tell you they're leaving — if you ask before they go. This module teaches surveys that surface problems early, reviews that double as retention, and the Save Play: the last-ditch offer before a customer walks.

Start module →

Module 5

Module 5: Retention into Referral

A happy customer is your cheapest acquisition channel — if you ask at the right moment. This module teaches when to ask for referrals, how to build an offer that runs itself, and the flywheel where retention feeds growth.

Choose your track

Not everyone needs the same path. Pick the one that fits where you are.

First-timer track

Modules 0–1: the retention math, then your onboarding sequence. If new customers aren't getting a real welcome right now, nothing downstream matters yet — fix the first seven days first.

Steady track

All modules in order, one per week. Write the onboarding sequence, build the win-back ladder, set up one loyalty mechanic, and install the feedback loop. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Rescue track

Modules 0, 2, and 4: the math, then straight to revenue — the win-back ladder for your dormant list and the Save Play for customers about to leave. Fastest path to recovered revenue.

Teardown: one weak welcome, one strong welcome

The weak welcome email: "Hi! Thanks for signing up — we're so excited to have you. Here's 20% off your next order. Follow us on Instagram!" Four sentences, zero guidance. The new customer learns nothing about what to do first, the coupon trains them to wait for discounts, and "follow us" asks for attention before delivering any value. Most new buyers file this under "nice" and never think about the business again.

The strong welcome email: "Welcome. Here's the one thing to do today: open the box, plug it in, and run the 5-minute setup — it takes less time than your coffee. Hit reply when it's done and tell me how it went. I'll read it myself." One job, one action, one human on the other end. The customer gets a win on day one, the reply starts a conversation, and the business learns who its engaged buyers are within 24 hours.

Now run the Onboarding Window test on both. The weak email wastes the highest-attention moment you'll ever get — the hours right after purchase, when the customer is most excited and most likely to act. The strong email spends that attention on the single action that predicts long-term retention: the first successful use. Onboarding isn't a greeting. It's a guided first win.

What most people would get wrong: they'd try to fix the weak email by making it prettier — a nicer template, a bigger discount, more exclamation points. None of that matters. The problem is structural: it asks nothing, teaches nothing, and measures nothing. A plain-text email with one clear job beats a designed email with none, every time.

The lesson: the first email sets the relationship's terms. Weak terms: you're a store that sends coupons. Strong terms: you're a guide who gets me results, and there's a human paying attention. That's the Onboarding Window — and once you see it, you'll never send a "thanks for signing up!" email again.
