Glossary: Master the LinkedIn Algorithm
Every key term from the course, in plain English. When a lesson says a word you don't know, it lives here.
- The Dwell Test
- Before publishing, read your post as a stranger and ask: would I stop scrolling for ten full seconds — and would I click 'see more'? If either answer is no, rewrite the opening until both are yes.
- The Comment Ladder
- The four-rung climb from invisible liker to commenter to conversation-starter to recognized voice. The critical threshold is rung two — around four genuine sentences — where comments cross into 'meaningful' territory.
- Dark Reach
- The invisible spread your content generates: profile views, screenshots shared in private channels, silent readers who DM months later. Never appears in analytics; where B2B business actually happens.
- Dwell time
- How many seconds a viewer keeps your post on screen. The algorithm's strongest ranking signal, because sustained attention is the hardest signal to fake.
- Golden hour
- The first 60–90 minutes after posting, when the algorithm measures early reactions from a test audience to decide how widely to distribute your post.
- Golden-hour test
- The distribution mechanism itself: every new post is shown to a small test audience first, and strong early signals unlock wider tiers of reach.
- Meaningful engagement
- The engagement tier the algorithm actually weighs: comments of four or more words, reply threads, saves, and shares with added commentary. Depth beats volume.
- Content pillar
- One of your 3–4 recurring posting themes, each doing a different job (teach, prove, opine, connect). Pillars kill blank-page panic and build topical credibility.
- Credibility signal
- The algorithm's slow-moving judgment of your account: topical consistency, engagement quality, and authenticity over time. Specialists compound it; generalists never build it.
- Employee advocacy
- Team members posting genuinely from personal profiles — which systematically out-distribute the same content from company pages, because people trust people.
- 'See more' click
- When a reader expands your post past the two-line cut. The most valuable single micro-action: it logs deliberate intent to keep reading and starts the dwell clock.
- Reply thread
- A comment conversation with multiple back-and-forth replies — especially with the author participating. Each reply adds dwell time and engagement the algorithm weighs heavily.
- Engagement bait
- 'Comment YES if you agree' and its cousins: begging for interaction without earning it. Detected and downranked — the algorithm rewards earned attention only.
- Engagement pod
- A group that agrees to like and comment on each other's posts. The pattern is obvious in the data, and the penalty is a quiet, lasting reach reduction. Never join one.
- Test audience
- The small initial group — some connections, some strangers — shown your post first. Their reactions in the golden hour decide whether distribution widens or stalls.
