Glossary: LinkedIn Personal Branding
Every key term from the course, in plain English. When a lesson says a word you don't know, it lives here.
- The SLAY Structure
- The four-part post framework: Story (a real moment that opens), Lesson (what it taught you), Actionable advice (something the reader can do today), You (a question that brings the reader into the conversation). Every post in this course runs on SLAY.
- The Landing-Page Profile
- Treating your LinkedIn profile as a conversion page instead of a resume. Banner, headline, about, and featured sections each have one job: turn a visitor into a follower, and a follower into a conversation.
- The Trust Funnel
- The path from attention to income: content builds trust, trust starts conversations, conversations become clients. Each stage feeds the next — selling at the top of the funnel, to strangers, is why most monetization fails.
- The 90-Day Rule
- Show up for ninety days — posts and comments as inputs — before judging whether LinkedIn works for you. Results lag the work by weeks; quitting at day 14 measures nothing.
- Story bank
- A running note on your phone where you capture real moments daily — funny, painful, surprising, small. The raw material for the S in every SLAY post, so you never face a blank page.
- One reader
- The specific person you picture before writing a post — a past client, a friend, your younger self. Writing to one person kills jargon and creates intimacy at scale.
- Value formula (headline)
- Who you help + how + proof. The structure for a headline that converts instead of a job title that merely describes.
- Purpose test
- The check before publishing anything personal: does this serve the reader, or just unburden me? Vulnerability passes; diary entries don't.
- 80/20 content mix
- 80% give (stories, lessons, advice), 20% ask (offers, links, pitches). The ratio that keeps trust compounding instead of eroding.
- Value-adding comment
- A comment that contributes: a counterpoint, a personal example, or a sharp question. The opposite of 'Great post!' — and the fastest organic growth lever on the platform.
- Cold DM
- A first message to a stranger containing a pitch. Always spam, regardless of wording. The cardinal sin of LinkedIn networking.
- Warm DM
- A message that starts a conversation: a specific reference to something they posted, a genuine question, zero ask. Earned through public engagement first.
- Top-50 list
- Your 50 most valuable connections, maintained deliberately: weekly comments on their posts, quarterly check-ins, congratulated wins. The highest-ROI ten minutes on LinkedIn.
- Discovery call
- A short conversation with a prospect structured as: their problem, your diagnosis, the offer, the next step. No decks, no week-long proposal cycles.
- Inbound lead
- A prospect who comes to you — via your content, profile, or a referral — already trusting you. Converts at a wildly different rate than any cold outreach, because the Trust Funnel did the selling first.
