Maximizing your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is free advertising on the world's biggest search engine — treat it like the asset it is. Beyond the basics (complete info, photos, hours), the free levers most businesses ignore: posts — publish a short update weekly (an offer, an event, a new photo with a caption); they expire after 7 days for most types, so weekly is the rhythm. Q&A — seed it yourself with the questions customers actually ask, then answer them; if you don't, strangers will answer for you, often wrongly. Products/services — list every service with a description; these feed Google's understanding of what you do. Reviews — the steady ask system from our Reviews & Reputation course, because review count and recency directly drive local rankings.

One underused free feature: the booking/appointment link and the messaging feature. If your business takes appointments, enabling direct booking removes friction between "found you" and "booked you." Every removed step increases conversion — and it costs nothing.

Measure it monthly in the GBP dashboard: how many people found you via search vs. maps, how many called, how many requested directions, how many visited the website. These numbers are your free-marketing scoreboard. If calls from GBP grow month over month, your free work is paying.

Common mistake

Setting up directory listings once and never touching them again. Stale hours, old photos, and unanswered Q&A make you look closed. A 15-minute monthly checkup keeps every listing working for you.

Your path

  1. Post weekly updates

An offer, an event, a new photo — they expire after 7 days, so weekly is the rhythm.

  2. Seed the Q&A

Ask the questions customers actually ask, then answer them yourself.

  3. List every product and service

Each with a description — it feeds Google's understanding of what you do.

  4. Run the steady review ask

Review count and recency directly drive local rankings.

  5. Enable direct booking and messaging

Every removed step increases conversion — and it costs nothing.

Build brief

Search your business the way a customer would ('your service + your town'). What shows up — and what's the first thing a buyer sees that's wrong or missing?

Free citations and directories

Citations — mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites — are a local ranking factor, and many are free. The essential free ones: Apple Maps (via Apple Business Connect), Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, and your industry's top 2–3 directories. Beyond those, there are dozens of general directories (think YellowPages-style sites) where a free listing takes five minutes each.

Don't pay for citation-building services until you've done the free ones yourself; the paid services mostly automate exactly this list. An afternoon with a spreadsheet and copy-paste covers 80% of the value. Revisit annually — directories change, and new industry ones appear.

Prioritize by impact: Apple Maps and Bing Places first (they feed voice assistants and non-Google search), then Yelp and Facebook (customers actually read these), then industry directories (relevance signals), then general directories last. An hour spent on the top five beats a day spent on fifty obscure ones — diminishing returns hit fast in citation work.

Build brief

Which local communities, groups, or forums do your buyers hang out in — Facebook groups, Nextdoor, Reddit, church bulletins? List the ones you could show up in for free.
