Module 1: The Credible Profile

Before you message a single prospect, they will check your profile. This module turns it from a resume into a sales asset — the Credibility Stack that builds trust before the first message is ever sent.

Your profile is your landing page

Here is what actually happens when you send a connection request or a message: the prospect clicks your name before they read your words. They scan your photo, your headline, your banner, and — if you pass that ten-second test — your About section. Your profile is not a resume. It is a landing page, and its one job is to make a skeptical stranger think: this person looks worth talking to.

Most profiles fail that test instantly. No photo, or a cropped wedding photo. A headline that reads like a job title: "Sales Director at TechCorp." An About section that starts with "I am a results-driven professional..." — written for a recruiter, not a prospect. Zero recent activity, which reads as either "this person never logs in" or "this person has nothing to say." Every one of those is a reason to ignore your message, and the prospect will never tell you — they will just never reply.

The profile view notification itself is a tool. When you view a prospect's profile, they get notified — which means a sharp profile turns a passive view into curiosity. Prospects click back. They read. They decide you are interesting before you have said a word. Optimize the profile first, outreach second — in that order, no exceptions. Everything in this module is about passing the ten-second scan.

Build brief

Draft three headline options using the formula: who you help + the outcome you deliver. Write them as a prospect would read them — which one would make YOUR ideal client curious?

The headline and banner

Your headline is the most-read line on your entire profile — it follows you everywhere: in search results, in connection requests, in comments, in DMs. And most people waste it on their job title. "Sales Director at TechCorp" tells a prospect nothing about why they should care. Your headline has one job: make the right prospect curious in a single line.

Use the seller's headline formula: who you help + the outcome you deliver. "I help SaaS founders turn trial users into paying customers" beats "Customer Success Manager" every time — because it speaks to the reader's problem, not your org chart. Keep it under 220 characters, lead with the outcome, and skip the buzzwords. "Results-driven growth catalyst" means nothing; "I help dental clinics fill their appointment books" means everything to a dentist.

Your banner is a billboard most people leave blank. Do not. A strong banner shows one of three things: proof (client logos, results, numbers), positioning (who you serve and what you do), or a clear next step. Canva has free LinkedIn banner templates sized correctly — this takes thirty minutes and it is visible in every single profile view. The headline earns the click; the banner earns the scroll. Together they decide whether the prospect reads further or goes back to their feed.

Build brief

List five proof points you could put on your profile: results, testimonials, numbers, client names, credentials. If you are light on proof, what is the fastest honest proof you could earn in the next 30 days?

The Credibility Stack

The Credibility Stack is the combination of three things — your profile, your content, and your engagement — that together create trust before the first message. A polished profile with zero activity looks like a brochure. Great content on a hollow profile looks like a stranger shouting. Thoughtful engagement with nothing behind it looks nice but converts nothing. The stack only works as a stack.

Layer one is the profile you just fixed — headline, banner, About section written to the prospect (their problems, your proof, in that order), and a Featured section with case studies, testimonials, or useful resources. Layer two is content: even one thoughtful post a week proves you are alive, informed, and generous with what you know. Layer three is engagement: visible, intelligent comments on other people's posts — which is also your warm-up engine from Module 3.

The final layer most sellers skip: recommendations. Three to five genuine recommendations from clients or colleagues act as third-party proof that you deliver. Ask for them directly — most happy clients will write one if you simply ask and make it easy. When a prospect checks you out and finds a sharp profile, useful content, smart comments, and clients vouching for you — the sale is half made before you type a word.

Build brief

Write the first two lines of your About section — the part visible before 'see more' — aimed squarely at your ideal prospect. Lead with their problem, not your biography.

Marcus's headline reads 'Sales Director at TechCorp.' His connection requests keep getting ignored. What is the highest-leverage fix?

Your turn: Rewrite your full headline and your About section opening (the two lines before 'see more') right here. Then list the three banner elements you will add this week.

Your next 24 hours

Rewrite your headline using the formula, update your banner with one clear proof point or positioning line, and request one recommendation from a happy client or colleague today. Three small moves, one credible profile.

Examples:
☐ I help SaaS founders turn trial users into paying customers.

☐ I help operations managers cut reporting time from days to hours.

Your turn: I help ___ ___.

Rules: lead with the outcome, name the who precisely, zero buzzwords.

Cheat sheet

  • Your profile is a landing page — its job is to make a stranger think you are worth talking to.
  • The ten-second scan: photo, headline, banner, then About. Fail fast or pass fast.
  • Headline formula: who you help + the outcome you deliver. Never just your job title.
  • Banner = billboard: proof, positioning, or a clear next step. Never leave it blank.
  • The Credibility Stack: profile + content + engagement = trust before the first message.
  • Three to five genuine recommendations are third-party proof. Ask for them directly.
