Module 4: The Earned Ask
Giving forever without asking is a hobby, not a business. This module is about the other half of the ledger: how to ask in a way that converts — because you've earned it.

Knowing when you've earned it
An Earned Ask is an ask made only after the ledger is clearly in the black — weeks of genuine deposits, an audience that's engaging, saving, and sharing. But "earned" isn't just a feeling; there are signals. People start asking you questions in comments and DMs. Strangers tag friends. Someone writes "do you sell this?" or "how do I hire you?" — that's the audience literally requesting the ask.
As a rule of thumb: if you've posted at least 20 genuine gives and your recent posts are getting real engagement (comments, saves, shares — not just likes), you've earned your first ask. If you're still in the first two weeks, you almost certainly haven't. Patience here is what separates accounts that convert from accounts that get muted.
The earned ask vs the cold ask

What evidence do you have (or need) that your audience wants what you sell? List the signals you've seen — DMs, comments, questions, shares.

Anatomy of a good ask
A good ask has five traits. One ask per post — never "buy, follow, share, and comment." Crystal clear — the reader knows exactly what to do ("book a free quote at the link"). Low friction — one tap, one form, no homework. Honest — it delivers what the gives promised, no bait-and-switch. And time-aware — it respects that attention is scarce ("takes 30 seconds").
The best asks feel like a natural next step, not an interruption. After ten posts teaching homeowners how to spot roof damage, "We do free 20-minute roof inspections — link in bio if you want us to check yours" doesn't feel salesy. It feels helpful. That's the whole trick: the ask should be the obvious continuation of the giving.

Soft asks vs. direct asks
Not every ask needs to be "buy now." Think of asks on a spectrum. Soft asks invite a small step: follow for more, save this post, join the free group, grab the free checklist. Direct asks request the sale: book the call, buy the product, sign the contract.
Use soft asks early and often — they're low-cost withdrawals that keep the ledger healthy while moving people closer. A soft ask after every few gives ("I post one of these every Tuesday — follow so you don't miss it") compounds your audience without spending trust. Save direct asks for when the ledger is deeply in the black: launches, promotions, and the moments your audience is actively pulling.
The mistake is jumping the spectrum: hitting a cold audience with "BUY NOW" is a massive withdrawal from an empty account. Match the size of the ask to the size of the balance.
The spectrum
Two kinds of ask
| Soft ask | Direct ask |
|---|---|
| Follow for more | Book the consult |
| Save this post | Buy now |

After [X weeks] of sharing [what you teach], here's the natural next step: [What you offer] — [who it's for] in one line. [Exactly what to do]: [link / DM the word ___ / tap here] [Remove friction]: Takes [30 seconds / one tap]. [Risk reversal: free quote, no pressure, cancel anytime]. You've watched me do this for free. If you want it done for you, this is how.
