Start a Paid Newsletter
Most writers give their best thinking away for free and never earn a dollar from it. By the end of this course you’ll have a paid newsletter ready to launch — your niche and promise defined, your platform set up, your free-to-paid path planned, and your pricing set.
No prerequisites — pairs well with Email Marketing.
A thousand true readers. That’s the whole business — a thousand people who pay you every month for your thinking. In six modules you’ll go from “what would I even write about” to a launched newsletter with free and paid tiers, a conversion path, and a retention system. No audience required to start. Start writing, and let the subscribers find you.
What you’ll learn
- Define a niche and a one-sentence promise that makes strangers subscribe
- Choose the right platform for your goals — fees, features, and who owns the list
- Build a free list first, then draw The Free Line and launch paid tiers with confidence
- Price, grow, and retain — referrals, cross-promotions, and churn control that keep subscribers paying
Is this for me?
Who is this course for?
Anyone who writes — or wants to write — about something they know: operators, freelancers, hobbyists, professionals. You don’t need an audience; newsletters are the machine that builds one. If you can write one useful email a week, this is your course.
What do I need before starting?
A topic you could write about weekly for a year, and an email address. No existing audience, no tech skills, no money — the platforms cost nothing until you start earning.
How long does it take?
Six modules, about 30–45 minutes each of learning. Most people finish in two weeks — and the real coursework is the writing itself: your first four issues, published on a schedule.
Module 0
Module 0: Start Here
The paid newsletter model: how writers actually get paid, the free-to-paid path, and the math of 1,000 true readers. Ten minutes now saves months later.

Module 1
Module 1: Your Niche & Promise
What you'll write about and the one-sentence promise that makes strangers subscribe. Nail this and every module after gets easier.

Module 2
Module 2: Pick Your Platform
Substack, Ghost, Patreon, Medium — features, fees, and who owns your list. A setup checklist that gets you live in an afternoon.

Module 3
Module 3: Free to Paid
Grow the free list first, draw The Free Line where curiosity peaks, then launch paid with a founding-member offer.

Module 4
Module 4: Writing That Retains
Consistency as strategy, voice and format, the welcome sequence, and The Open Loop that makes skipping next week unthinkable.

Module 5
Module 5: Pricing & Growth
Pricing tiers from $5 to $75, referral programs, cross-promotions, and churn control — the systems that turn subscribers into income.
Choose your track
Not everyone needs the same path. Pick the one that fits where you are.
Quick launch track
Modules 0–2, then launch: niche, promise, platform, first issue. Get live in a weekend — you can refine everything after you’re publishing.
Steady track
All modules in order, one per week. Publish your first free issue in week 2, launch paid in week 6. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Deep track
All modules plus the full build brief — niche research, platform comparison, four pre-written issues, pricing model. Launch paid from day one with a founding-member offer.

Teardown: one weak landing page, one strong landing page
The weak landing page: “Welcome to my newsletter! I write about marketing, business, and life. Subscribe for weekly updates.” It promises nothing, speaks to no one, and gives no reason to hand over an email address. “Weekly updates” is the least exciting promise on the internet — updates about what, for whom, and why should anyone care?
The strong landing page: “The Pricing Playbook — every Tuesday, one pricing tactic that took me from $2k to $20k months. Free subscribers get the tactic. Paid subscribers get the teardown, the templates, and the monthly Q&A. 4,000 operators read it. Join free, upgrade when you’re ready.” Every line does a job. The promise is specific (one tactic, every Tuesday). The reader is named (operators). The free line is drawn where curiosity peaks — the tactic is free, the teardown is paid. The social proof is real (4,000 readers). And the paid tier is described as the natural upgrade, not a pitch.
Now run The Free Line test on both. The weak page has no line at all — there’s nothing to want more of. The strong page draws the line exactly where curiosity peaks: you read the free tactic and immediately wonder what the teardown shows. Free readers finish every issue thinking “if the free stuff is this good, the paid stuff must be incredible.” That thought is the entire conversion engine.
What most people would get wrong: they’d fix the weak page with design — a prettier header, a stock photo, a fancier font. None of that matters. The problem is the promise. Nobody subscribes to “updates.” People subscribe to outcomes on a schedule. This is Module 1’s whole point: the one-sentence promise does more work than any design ever will.
The lesson: a newsletter landing page is a promise plus a schedule plus a free line. Promise (one pricing tactic), schedule (every Tuesday), free line (tactic free, teardown paid). That’s Modules 1 through 3 in a single paragraph — and it’s the difference between a list that grows and a page nobody signs.
