Glossary: Start a Paid Newsletter
Every key term from the course, in plain English. When a lesson says a word you don’t know, it lives here.
- The Free Line
- The exact boundary between your free content and paid content. Draw it where curiosity peaks: free teaches the what and the why, paid delivers the how, the teardowns, and the templates.
- The 1,000 True Readers
- The idea that 1,000 paying subscribers is a full-time income. At $10/month, that’s $120,000 a year — no viral fame required, just a thousand people who find you indispensable.
- The Open Loop
- Ending an issue with an unanswered question the next issue will answer. Turns casual readers into habitual ones — but only if the next issue actually delivers on the tease.
- Paid tier
- The subscription level readers pay for — usually $5–$75/month. Unlocks premium issues, the archive, community access, or direct access to you.
- Free tier
- The no-cost subscription level that builds trust and grows your list. Free readers are the top of your funnel — typically 5–10% convert to paid over time.
- Conversion rate
- The percentage of free subscribers who become paying subscribers. Healthy newsletters convert 5–10% of their free list.
- Churn
- The percentage of paid subscribers who cancel each month. Under 5% monthly is healthy; above 10% means something is broken.
- Open rate
- The percentage of subscribers who open an issue. 40–60% is strong for newsletters — it measures your subject lines and your readers’ trust.
- Welcome sequence
- The 3–5 automated emails every new subscriber receives. Onboards them: who you are, what to expect, your best issues, and the paid pitch.
- Founding member
- An early paid subscriber offered a locked-in low rate for joining at launch. Rewards risk-takers, creates urgency, and builds your first evangelists.
- Referral program
- A system giving each subscriber a unique link and milestone rewards for bringing new readers. 3 referrals, 10 referrals, 25 referrals — each unlocking something readers actually want.
- Cross-promotion
- Two newsletters recommending each other to their audiences. The highest-converting free growth channel when the newsletters are similar in size.
- Lead magnet
- A free, high-value piece of content offered in exchange for an email address. One killer issue beats a generic “subscribe” box every time.
- Paywall
- The barrier between free and paid content. Newsletters typically paywall individual premium issues rather than the whole publication.
- Cadence
- Your publishing rhythm. Weekly is the sweet spot for most newsletters — frequent enough to build a habit, sustainable enough to maintain for years.
