Referral & Affiliate Programs
Word of mouth is the cheapest customer acquisition there is — but only when you build a system for it. By the end of this course you'll be able to design, track, and launch a referral or affiliate program by hand, with a spreadsheet and tools you already have.
Start with Building an Online Community — Fluent Collective Courses

Your happiest customers would bring you new ones — if you gave them a reason and a way. In six modules you'll design an offer people actually share, track every referral with nothing but codes and a spreadsheet, and launch it to the customers you already have.
What you'll learn
- Choose the right program — referral or affiliate — for the job you're actually trying to do.
- Design a reward offer people want to share: the economics and psychology of an offer that actually moves.
- Track every referral with unique coupon codes and a simple spreadsheet — no software needed to start.
- Launch to your existing customers first, then recruit affiliates who actually promote instead of just signing up.
Is this for me?
Who is this course for?
Businesses with existing happy customers. If people already buy from you and like you, you're sitting on your cheapest acquisition channel.
What do I need before starting?
Customers — existing ones. Plus a way to fulfill new orders when they come in.
How long does it take?
Six modules at 30–45 minutes each. Most people design and launch in two to three weeks.

Start here
Module 0: How this course works
Five minutes of orientation before you begin — what you'll learn, how to use the course, and what you'll have at the end.

Module 1
Module 1: Referrals vs. affiliates — pick your weapon
Referral and affiliate programs sound similar but serve different jobs. This module makes sure you build the right one before you spend a week on the wrong one.

Module 2
Module 2: Designing an offer people actually share
Most referral programs fail because the reward is boring, confusing, or one-sided. This module is the economics and psychology of an offer worth sharing.

Module 3
Module 3: Tracking everything with codes and a spreadsheet
You don't need referral software to start. Unique coupon codes plus a simple spreadsheet tracks every referral accurately up to hundreds of partners — and you'll understand the system deeply when you eventually outgrow it.

Module 4
Module 4: Launching to your existing customers
Your first 50 referrers are already on your customer list. This module is the launch sequence that activates them.

Module 5
Module 5: Recruiting affiliates who actually promote
Affiliates don't fall from the sky. This module covers finding the right promoters, pitching them, and giving them what they need to sell for you.

Module 6
Module 6: Running, measuring, and scaling the program
Launch is the starting line. This module keeps the program healthy: the numbers to watch, the fraud to prevent, and how partners stay motivated for years.

Teardown: the SaaS "refer a friend, get $5" nobody uses
A project-management SaaS with 3,000 paying customers has run a referral program for 18 months: "Give $5, get $5." In all that time, 41 referrals have been made — total. The program exists on a settings page nobody visits. The founder calls word-of-mouth "not really a channel for us."
What's working: The product has genuine fans — NPS surveys show 60+ scores. The customer base is large enough to matter. The infrastructure (referral links) technically functions.
What's broken: The offer insults the advocate's effort. Recommending business software to a peer risks social capital; $5 doesn't compensate. There's no tracking beyond a generic link — no codes, no sense of who's driving what. The program was never launched — it appeared silently in settings, with no email to existing customers, no in-app prompt at moments of delight, no reminder. And there's no affiliate tier for the power users (consultants, agencies) who'd promote for real commissions.
The fix, in course order: Module 1 — split the program: referrals for regular users (give a free month, get a free month — value both sides feel) and affiliates for consultants (20–30% recurring commission — worth their effort). Module 2 — redesign the offer around the advocate's motivation: status and generosity, not $5. "Give your network 20% off their first year" makes the sharer look good. Module 3 — unique codes per advocate, tracked in a simple sheet, so you know your top 10 referrers by name. Module 4 — launch with an email to all 3,000 customers plus in-app prompts after positive moments (project completed, milestone hit). Module 5 — personally recruit 20 consultants with a real commission offer. A program like this, properly built, should produce hundreds of referrals a year from a 3,000-customer base — not 41 in 18 months.
